Traeger® Junior Elite Expert Review
With grills, it seems the popular belief is that bigger is better. Not so. I believe that there’s a grill for everyone, and for some people small is the just the right size. The Traeger Junior Elite is a small pellet grill that can handle backyard duty or be packed up and taken tailgating or camping.
Reasons to Buy
For me, the Junior Elite's small size is it’s biggest advantage. Not everyone wants or needs a large pellet grill, especially if it’s primarily being used as a smoker. Thanks to its compact design, the Junior Elite is a great option for small families or those with limited outdoor space—despite its modest size, it can capably handle 2 whole chickens, 3 full racks of ribs, or multiple pork butts. At just 36 inches tall and weighing only 62 pounds, it’s also portable enough to be packed up and taken camping, tailgating, or in the mountains.
One of my favorite things about the Junior Elite is its price. A quality pellet grill under $500, it’s a good fit for those who want Traeger quality at an affordable price. However, the Junior Elite’s price tag also makes it a great option for traditional grill owners looking for an easy-to-use backyard smoker that can also roast, bake, and grill.
Reasons to Keep Shopping
While I like the Junior Elite’s size, it does fall into the category of neither-nor—it’s neither big enough to feed more than a few people nor is it quite compact enough to be a true portable grill. For those who like to grill for a crowd, consider going with a bigger pellet grill like the Traeger Lil’ Tex Elite. For more portability, consider the Traeger Tailgater, which has folding legs, or the Traeger PTG+, which is smaller and meant for travel. Finally, although the Junior Elite’s digital control board can roughly maintain +/- 20℉, it falls well short of the precision PID controllers used by more advanced pellet grill. For a small PID controlled pellet grill, I suggest the Louisiana Grills Tailgater.
