Updated for 2017, the Kamado Joe Classic boasts amazing innovations and an all-inclusive package that leaves other egg grills green with envy. This 18” ceramic kamado grill offers incredible versatility: Crank up the heat to 700°F to sear steaks, settle into a comfortable 350°F to roast a succulent turkey, or hold a steady 250°F to smoke BBQ brisket. Stocked with impressive updates, the Kamado Joe Classic features the groundbreaking Air Lift Hinge, which decreases dome weight by 90% while allowing you to open the lid partway--go ahead an let go, it'll hold its position without closing shut. Also new is the patented Advanced Multi Panel firebox (AMP) that increases durability without compromising performance. And unlike other ceramic grills, Kamado Joe grills come loaded with standard accessories, including a painted cast iron cart, folding side shelves and a deflector plate, an absolute necessity for smoking low-and-slow BBQ, as well as an ash tool and grate gripper. Like a lot of people, it’s hard for me to part with a dollar. So when I spend money on a grill, I want that money to go far. In a kamado market that too often makes you buy the accessories needed to enjoy the full kamado experience, the Kamado Joe Classic is the rare grill that offers everything you need in an affordable all-inclusive package.
Reasons to Buy
Most kamado grills are the same, with the same features and capabilities. Kamado Joe is different. With their 2017 update, Kamado Joe added some groundbreaking features and innovative updates that have created some real separation between what them and every other kamado grill. The most exciting of those updates is the Air Lift Hinge, which reduces the dome weight by 90%. And while that's impressive, what I most love about the new hinge is that I can open the lid partway, let go, and it will remain in that position. It will not close or slam shut. No other kamado grill has anything like it...and that's just one of the updates.
If I were the type to judge a grill solely by its price, I might think the Kamado Joe Classic with Cart is pricier than its competitors. Fortunately, I read the fine print. With most kamado grills, you get the grill and only the grill. If you’re like me, thought, you want to smoke BBQ on your kamado, and you definitely don’t want to have lift a 188 lb ceramic grill to move it across the patio. Fortunately, Kamado Joe is a lot like me. The Kamado Joe Classic with Cart not only comes standard with a cart on wheels, it includes side shelves, the Divide & Conquer Flexible Cooking System for multi-level cooking and 2 half-moon deflector plates, a must-have for smoking. It also comes with a slide-out ash drawer and ash tool, which make cleanup a whole lot easier, and a grate gripper for handling hot grates. Although these features are offered by other brands, they’re typically sold separately, increasing the overall cost beyond that of a Kamado Joe.
It’s incredibly superficial, but I also can’t help but love the Kamado Joe’s cherry-red finish. Having one on the patio is like having a classic red Mustang in the driveway or red Gibson SG in your basement—it demands attention. Even from across the yard, the Kamado Joe announces its presence, letting you know it’s no ordinary grill. Guest’s know to expect more than the typical burgers and dogs, especially once the smoke starts billowing from the damper. So, yeah, I like the red finish. It’s like a bright neon sign advertising good food and good times.
Reasons to Keep Shopping
At 18”, the Kamado Joe Classic can cook for 2-5 people. For any more than that I suggest investing in extra cooking racks or a larger grill, such as the Big Joe. Also, controlling the temperature takes some finesse. Like all ceramic grills, the Kamado Joe Classic heats up fast, but if it gets too hot it can be difficult to lower the temperature. If you want better temperature control, I’d consider an automatic temperature controller like the Flame Boss or opt instead for a pellet grill.
